AMCF Member firm The Saint Consulting Group was profiled in a recent publication of the Financial Times for their fifth annual Saint Index which surveys public attitudes towards big local land projects and shows that the economic slowdown in the US has increased potential local support for new superstores, hospitals and even power plants.
Sixty-eight per cent of 1,000 adults surveyed in June by The Saint Consulting Group, which specializes in land use approval politics, said they were more likely to support projects in their home towns because of the economy – up from 59 per cent last year.
Effectively managing human resources across international borders has always been a challenge. Today, social media could pose new problems for HR managers but also new opportunities to listen, build relationships, connect, and maintain ties with prospective employees, the current workforce, and alumni. The key to using social media for internal communication is listening to internal constituents across borders and building programs that connect people but do not take an “one size fits all” approach.
The application for the 2010-2011 Richard Metzler Scholarship is now available. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding individuals planning a career in consulting and are currently pursuing an MBA degree. This year, four scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded.
According to a research report by The Bloom Group, BlissPR and the Association of Management Consulting Firms, consulting firms are ramping up spending on social media to drive thought-leadership marketing strategies. The authors offer these key findings:
1. Firms are quickly expanding their budgets for social media
2. Social media will increasingly complement traditional thought leadership marketing channels
3. Other social media tools are gaining on traditional techniques
4. Running out of content and determining how to use it as a marketing tool are the two biggest concerns about social media
5. The firms with the most effective thought leadership marketing programs are much more likely to use research-based content, and they invest much more in social media than consulting firms with the least effective programs
Father and son authors Richard Metzler and Jon Metzler interviewed over 35 senior consultants whose careers represent nearly 1,000 years of experience. These veterans are smart and have a keen eye for the moment. They see and seize the moment, and they remember that moment. They also are great story tellers and whenever they get together the stories just seem to pour out.
For those who have been consultants or who have thought of becoming one, this book is a must read. It is an unbeatable collection of insights and lessons from the “Wizards” of the profession. That is what this book is all about -senior consultants passing on their wisdom to the next generation.
All proceeds help fund the Richard Metzler Scholarship awarded by the Foundation for Excellence in Management Consulting.
Should consulting firms make social media a key piece of the thought leadership marketing mix?
To shed light on this issue, The Bloom Group, BlissPR and the Association of Management Consulting Firms (AMCF) conducted an extensive survey on social media and other thought leadership marketing practices of North American consulting firms. The preliminary results were presented in NYC on March 19th.
On June 28th the Supreme Court clarified the rules applicable to what are sometimes called “business process” or “business method” patents in the Bilski et al. v. Kappos decision.
The issue in the case was whether a patent could be obtained for a claimed invention that explains how buyers and sellers of commodities in the energy market can protect, or hedge, against the risk of price changes.
The Court held that the patent application in this case could not be granted because it attempted to patent abstract ideas. However, the court declined to prohibit a business method patent. In short, the opinion leaves open the possibility that there are at least some processes that can be fairly described as business methods that are patentable.
